We, at Gwenstone Mastiffs, wish to provide you with a healthy pet that will be your companion and family member for many years to come.

The Health of the Mastiff page

We test all our breeding Mastiffs for genetic disorders and screen for others.

The fact remains that just because the dogs and bitches pass their hips and elbows, there is no guarantee that they will not develop a form of hip or elbow dysplasia during the course of their lives.  Again, there is no DNA marker for Hip or Elbow or Cardiac.  Just as we humans have no control over genetics…same with the Mastiff.  Should any breeder guarantee 100% that their pup will not develop HD, I would seriously reconsider purchasing that pup.  We stand behind our breedings and will always be there to assist and advise you.

We are serious breeders and a Championship title is not our criteria.  There are too many dogs who do receive a Championship title that should never be bred as they are not good representation of our breed.  A lot more goes into a breeding program and many of the judges are “All-rounders” and do not specialize in the Mastiff.

We’ve been breeding for 25 years and we breed for a massive dog as the Standard calls for.

Many “All-rounders” prefer a more refined dog which goes against the Standard.  We will not allow the show ring to dictate what type of Mastiff we should breed.  Shows are fun and enjoyable especially when the owner/breeder presents their dog.  The fun is gone once that dog is placed with a professional handler.  We take pride in all we have and produce.  The dog always comes first.
